BLUE CROSS CHALLENGE

Tara and Katie, nurses at Beaumont Botley and Kidlington, decided to take on a challenge of a lifetime.

The Blue Cross was raising funds by asking enthusiasts to walk 60 miles across the Great Rift Valley, Tanzania, Africa, in order to help the animals in its care.

Each participant had to raise a minimum sponsorship of £2995 in order to take part in the challenge. Both nurses had to undertake a fitness regime and joined the local gym in addition to trekking with their dogs, in order to make sure they were fit enough to participate. For quite a few months their lives consisted of work, gym, sleep and not much in-between!

The challenge itself was very tough, with lots of different terrain, ranging from sand, to rocks, to savannah and nasty acacia thorns to avoid! The temperature was also very hot and proved quite tough going at around 40 degrees, compared to our much milder British weather!! They walked for on average 8-9 hours per day, and at night slept in tents, with basic toilet and bucket shower facilities! They got up close to wildlife such as zebra, giraffe, and gazelle whilst on their travels, and on the final day were treated to a safari to reward their efforts.

In total the group has raised at least £40,000 for the charity, which will help them greatly as they receive no government funding.

Tara and Katie would like to thank colleagues and clients who donated. The support was much appreciated.
